Gorgeous Writer’s Keepsake Box

Sometimes books fall apart 😦 or they’re just too old…what do you do with them when you can’t bear to throw them away?
Authentically authory (I know that’s not a real word…), but this wordy, page covered Keepsake or Memory box is gorgeous and made by daughter! Now I want one too!

It’s made from an old shoe box, using torn out pages from an old or damaged book and pva glue. She covered it with my matt finish Mod Podge glue and added a brass cupboard door handle at each end, using her favourite ‘Serious’ Glue from Evo Stick. If you want more info the process is on her blog:  bekahcat.blogspot and see more pictures!
I love it and it looks amazing, even better than the picture shows!
Below added 16th April:
And here is my box…
Made from a second copy of one of my favourite trilogies ‘Abhorsen’ by Garth Nix.
My daughter has some really good ideas! That, and she wouldn’t let me keep my sewing kit in an old ice-cream box if I wanted it out ‘on show’…so it has a new box…voila!

The Future belongs to Those who Believe in the Beauty of their Dreams

Eleanor Roosevelt had it exactly right…the future really does belong to those who believe in their dreams…

How many of us started out with huge dreams…the kind that stretched far, far beyond what we can see? How many of us played in the woods building forts and defending them from intruders and dragons, or by the ocean building sand castles and trenches? Were you so lost in books that you felt the Famous Five were your best friends? Did you skirt the local park with dark glasses searching for villains and opportunities to spy or use your magic super powers? Did you build Lego towns and fill them with adventure? Did you play ‘Pooh Sticks’ or race paper boats down the river? Did you draw fantastical pictures and wait at night for them to come alive? Were your stories so magical you slipped into them when you dreamed at night? Did you make mud pies and feed a family of dolls and teddy bears? Did you dream? Did you have dreams so strong you were sure you would achieve them?

I did…I knew exactly what I wanted as a child… I wanted to own horses, to spend my days galloping across mountains and valleys… I wanted to live by the ocean and swim in the sea every day… I wanted to write and see my stories published… I wanted to draw and paint and illustrate… Yes, I had dreams…

To be truthful, some were just childhood imaginings, fun, playtime. I was never going to live in the forest and defend my homestead from dragons…
I had ambition, as a child I wanted to write and draw, and I did, making books from A5 paper…I devoured Cicely Mary Barker’s ‘Flower Fairies’ and made up my own, stapling pages together and inventing rhymes to go with them. I bought tiny A6 notepads and wrote stories, lost in a world of my own. I drew, sitting on my bed with a sketch pad, my tongue protruding as I concentrated on my art, sketching for hours.

My dreams grew with aspirations and ideas as I got older, just as my art did. From the crude pencil drawings of a ten-year-old, to more sophistication at thirteen and more mature at nineteen. My dreams grew up…but not always in a good way. I became cynical and reserved in my dreams, trying to think of things that could actually happen, things that weren’t too lofty for me to achieve…and perhaps that’s just where I began to lose them…

I began to doubt myself, my ability and question the reality of the things I once wanted. Was I good enough to illustrate, or to write something that people, real people, would actually want to read? That doubt, along with the realities of life, leaving school, getting a job, getting married and having children, stopped me from pursuing those things I’d dreamed of all my childhood.

I don’t blame anyone, I just let life take over and my dreams faded like an old masterpiece hung on a wall that no one does more than glance at, left to saturate in the glare of every day sun.
I could have been more than the sum of what I am right now…that does make me sad…there is so much more I could have achieved. It was when I was thirty that I decided I could become more, that those old buried dreams deserved a second look. And I began to write.

Self-belief has taken a lot longer…however, slowly over the years those shattered dreams have come alive, my writing has fed my aspirations and words that I thought would never interest anyone have become the tool for rebuilding those dreams.

So, yes, it’s true I have never found myself dwelling in the woods defending my little wooden fort from all things evil, but those dragons I used to chase off in my imagination, now live on paper. I believe in them, I believe in me…and that’s where it all starts…the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams…I intend to believe in mine!

Five Sentence Fiction: Tears

“Please don’t,” I could barely look at her, couldn’t take the pleading and couldn’t bear the tears that gathered in her eyes or the gentle, but compulsive, wringing of her hands, “You don’t need to do this.”
My mouth set, lips pursed and locked, my hands clenched and controlled by both fury and a despair that threatened to drown me. My wretched heart thudded against my chest echoing the blood pounding through my veins and her voice cut through the tension, “Please don’t do it…” this time her hands shook as she roughly wiped mascara across her cheek.
My eyes stung but my grip tightened, my fingers, hot and slippery, but secure as they clutched my weapon of choice.
She turned away, grief consuming her, and I was glad I could no longer see her flood of tears as I stared resolutely in the mirror, seeing nothing but my own blurry image staring back, and the scissors cut…and the first of many fistfuls of my long, gloriously long, auburn hair fell to the ground…

Five Sentence Fiction: Scorching

Caught off guard they crouched as the fierce tempest raged above and a ruby wing swept down sending a cloud of red dust spiralling up into the air.
Sand swirled and a crimson dragon hurled a yellow flame, its thunderous roar echoed and the hogs in the field screeched and squealed as they stumbled. The dragon lowered its leg and plucked its prey, skewered in a single movement.
The beast dipped its wings and as it launched back into the sky its vermilion scales blazed in the sun.
Matt broke the sudden silence “Flame grilled…” he said, “Now that’s what I call fast food!”

couldn’t have asked for a better prompt word!)

Five Sentence Fiction: Wicked

She sat beneath the camellia, absently rubbing a broad, waxy leaf between finger and thumb. Only the tips of her feet, clad in baby pink Mary Janes, peeped out as heavy drops of rain began to fall echoing the weight in her heart. Bile rose in her throat and a wave of nausea threatened to remind her of breakfast. Her name rang out and she pressed her tiny spine against the thick, shrubby stem desperately biting her hand to prevent the accumulating sobs from noisily escaping – silence was vital. Heavy brogues padded up the garden path, searching, coaxing and impatient…and pink shoes gently withdrew from sight, receding beneath the camellia’s protection.

Chalkboard Redesign…

I’ve always wanted a lovely chalkboard for my dining room… at present I have an old cork board, which is so full no one can read anything on it! So scrolling down Pinterest I found homemade cork board and it inspired me.
I found a chalkboard at The Range for £6 and collected my ideas…
We don’t drink tea or coffee, so the coffee tiles on the board just didn’t fit my home, but they made a great place to start scrapbooking. I wanted to attach clothes pegs so I could still keep notes and the obligatory school letters somewhere safe, and I have discovered a love for odd buttons!
This is how it turned out…
I collected family photographs, scraps, pegs and buttons… Rather than cut the pictures neatly, I tore them and chalked the rough edges. I used Gloss Mod Podge glue (you could use PVA) and covered the tiles at the top of the board then placed my photographs. When they were secure I painted over them with Mod Podge  to give a gloss finish and protection. While the glue dried I got out the hot glue gun, Yay! I glued clothes pegs where I wanted them and random buttons across the frame.
When the glue dried I was left with a lovely scrapbook effect panel on my chalkboard. The buttons make great decoration and I love the pegs! Overall I’m very happy with the final result!

Five Sentence Fiction: Enchanted

‘His blue and green scales shimmered, and their flickering colours mesmerized her, a faint sheen of lemon reflected the sky above and Hannah took a subconscious step forward. She instinctively ran her hands over the dragon’s scales and they were smooth, almost velvety, then rough and coarse as she changed direction; she’d imagined his scales to be hard and cold, like the shiny, metallic colours ought to be.
The dragon bent his head and nuzzled her hair, making her jump as his hot breath tickled. His eyes followed as she ran her hand across his flank, like a small child brushing past railings, and he lifted his wing to let her pass beneath.

She gently took his wing and rubbed her cheek against the blue hide, it felt like smooth leather, supple and strong, and as her finger stroked its underside, which looked and felt like shot silk, his wing rippled beneath her touch.’

Five Sentence Fiction: Yearning

We lay, our bodies barely touching, the sheet draped across our stomachs as the pale moon peeked nervously through the curtains. My eyes roved, taking in the contours of his upper body lit by silvery rays. I could almost see his heart beating beneath his skin and I licked my lips. My hand moved slowly, gently, and my fingers lightly stroked the dark, wiry hair covering his chest. My head swam with longing and my body was awake with desire…then…he snored…

Face Painting from Cute Rabbits to Gory Zombies…

This could well be one of the faces that started it…
Bekah took on re-creating Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ character faces for her A-level work a year or so ago. See Here for Bekah’s Original Art Post She made us all up as character’s…even myself as the Queen of Hearts…no, don’t look! It turned into amazing exam work and took her off to art college.
Now art college wasn’t working…She was in college from 9am to 4pm, then working evenings from 5pm to 9pm and was struggling to complete homework etc. Things didn’t go well, and she had no time for her newly developed love of facepainting, so with our support she decided to leave college and concentrate on starting up her own business.
Work was financing the set up and she’s talented enough to pull it off! We’re so proud that she’s out there doing something she loves and attempting one of the hardest things…starting your own business.
She’s worked on advertising, business cards, and many, many faces…
Just recently she’s been working on special effect make up. Part of her A-Level had her make up her little sister as a zombie…and now the gory looks are expanding!
Bekah’s Facepainting Business page is: Masterpiece Face Painting Take a look… She’s had some strong interest is now planning faces for her first paying work…children’s parties…

Anyone want a tiger?
Or a little Monster?

There are cool sharks and spiders for the lads,
and unicorns and rainbows for the girls…
Gorgeous Swirls and Fairy Masks
Go extreme, be Darth Maul…
What about an evil clown…. *Shiver*
The Zombie…now we enter special effect make up…
So this is my youngest daughter after oldest daughter got hold of her…What can I say?
If you could be made up or painted what would you choose? Cute or pretty? Gory and disturbing? Traditional or something different?
What do you think?
